Somerset Patriots: 25 Years of Baseball Success and 2024 Freitas Award
2024-12-18
The Somerset Patriots, once a part of the independent Atlantic League, have continued to shine brightly. Now affiliated with the Yankees, this franchise has been a force on and off the field for an impressive 25 years. Their success has earned them the prestigious Freitas Award at Double-A this year, a recognition that builds on a tradition of being one of the top organizations in professional baseball. The legacy traces back to the beloved late founder Steve Kalafer, who is proudly carried on by his sons, Jonathan and Josh Kalafer, as co-chairmen.
Minor League Baseball's Creative Community
Jonathan Kalafer emphasizes the creativity within Minor League Baseball. "Minor League Baseball is composed of some of the most creative and innovative people in any field. Being fortunate enough to be a part of the MiLB community puts a smile on our faces every day, and to be recognized as the best this year is the icing on the cake." This sense of community and innovation is at the heart of the Patriots' success.Transition from Independent to Affiliated Baseball
Longtime president and GM Patrick McVerry played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition from independent to affiliated baseball. "That has a lot to do with the staff, many of whom have been here for two decades. We grew into our positions, we grew with the Atlantic League. But, because of Steve Kalafer, we ran our organization similar to how the Yankees run theirs... (and) when the Yankees came calling, the timing felt right—and I feel like they made a great choice to come here." This transition has been seamless, allowing the Patriots to build on their existing success.Off-Field Innovations
Off the field, Somerset has been making waves with their innovative promotions and marketing. The Jersey Diners alternate identity went viral quickly in 2024, highlighting their ability to think outside the box. Additionally, a tribute to the Black Yankees, Sopranos Night, and a Joe Torre appearance added to the excitement. In 2024, they also set high marks in social media engagement, ranking fourth at Double-A with over 39 million total impressions. Their broadcasting efforts were also top-notch, with 1.6 million minutes streamed and eight games shown on the Yankees' YES Network.Player Development and Partnership
The Yankees organization has been quick to recognize the Patriots' commitment to player development. Yankees senior vice president and GM Brian Cashman said, "The Kalafer family and the Patriots staff have shown an unbelievable commitment to the development of our players, and have been incredible partners in investing in our future. This is not only demonstrated by the premier facilities in Somerset, but also in the results with over 43 former Patriots going on to become major leaguers since our affiliation began in 2021." The partnership between the Yankees and the Patriots has been a resounding success, with Gerrit Cole's June 4 rehab start drawing an affiliation-era record 8,260 fans to Somerset's home park.
