Head Coach Dillon Pottish has unveiled an exhilarating 24-match schedule for the St. John’s men’s tennis team, marking the beginning of their 2025 season. The Red Storm, fresh off five consecutive BIG EAST Tournament Championship appearances, will face formidable competition, including three teams that qualified for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. A highlight of the season includes hosting ten matches at prestigious venues such as the UTSA National Tennis Center, Cunningham Park, and the St. John’s Outdoor Courts.
The season kicks off with a challenging start in Binghamton, New York, where the Johnnies will face Binghamton University on January 24, followed by Niagara University the next day. These early encounters set the tone for what promises to be an intense and competitive season. After returning to Queens, the team will host several double-headers, including matches against Quinnipiac, Rider, Morgan State, and FDU. February sees the Red Storm venturing out for crucial BIG EAST matches in West Point and Omaha, Nebraska, further testing their mettle against conference rivals Marquette, Georgetown, and Creighton.
The journey through March and April is equally demanding, with matches spread across various locations from Arizona to Connecticut. Notable highlights include facing Northern Arizona for the first time in program history and renewing rivalries with Hofstra and Cornell. The season culminates with two home matches against Villanova and St. Joseph’s, both held at the St. John’s Outdoor Courts. Following the regular season, the BIG EAST Tournament will take place in Cayce, South Carolina, adding another layer of excitement to this already packed calendar.
Coach Pottish returns eight seasoned players from last year’s squad, including standout freshman Armando Sotelo and two-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection Carl Gustavsson. This experienced lineup is poised to make significant strides, not only in maintaining their dominance within the BIG EAST but also in setting new benchmarks for the program. The rigorous schedule serves as a testament to the team's commitment to excellence and their readiness to compete at the highest level.
