Syracuse Football's Another Starting Cornerback Joins Transfer Portal
2024-12-17
Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse football program is facing a significant turnover in its cornerback position. Starting cornerback Jayden Bellamy, along with true freshman Marcellus Barnes and senior Clarence Lewis, have all announced their intentions to explore transfer options. This leaves the Orange with the task of replacing three starters in the secondary next season.

Syracuse's Defensive Backfield in Flux: Bellamy's Transfer and Beyond

Jayden Bellamy's Impact at Syracuse

Last year, Bellamy led Syracuse with two interceptions and was second with six pass break-ups. He also made 37 tackles and finished with the defense's fifth-best Pro Football Focus grade, ranking second behind only Clarence Lewis among full-time starters. He came to Syracuse in 2023, transferring from Notre Dame after a year there. Bellamy began his college career as a three-star prospect, ranked as the No. 5 player in New Jersey and the No. 452 player nationally. He played for New Jersey powerhouse Bergan Catholic, coached by Vito Campanile, the brother of the SU quarterbacks coach.

His departure will be a significant loss for the Syracuse defense. His experience and skills on the field will be difficult to replace. However, the Orange will look to the remaining cornerbacks and recruits to step up and fill the void.

The Returning Cornerbacks and New Transfers

Redshirt junior Greg Delaine and true freshman Davien Kerr are the two returning cornerbacks who played the most this season and are likely to be on SU's roster next year. Louisville transfer Marcus Washington came to SU last offseason but did not play due to injury. Devin Grant played some cornerback during the season but ended the year playing safety.

In addition to these players, Syracuse's Class of 2025 has two highly ranked defensive backs in Demetres Samuel Jr. and Kaylib Singleton. These recruits will provide hope for the future of the cornerback position.

The Impact on the Syracuse Defense

The loss of three starters in the secondary will have a significant impact on the Syracuse defense. The Orange will need to rely on the remaining players to step up and perform at a high level. This may require some adjustments to the defensive scheme and game plan.

However, the Syracuse coaching staff is confident that they can find ways to replace the lost talent and continue to compete at a high level. They will look to the remaining players and recruits to develop and grow into key contributors on the defense.
