Freshmen Phenoms Rewrite the Record Books
A Promising Start: Dominating the Doubles Circuit
From the moment Grier Peckham and Caroline Koch stepped onto the court for their varsity debut, it was clear they were a force to be reckoned with. The highly touted freshmen paired up at the Columbus School for Girls Doubles Invitational, where they cruised to the title, defeating formidable opponents with ease. Their performance was a harbinger of things to come, as Gilmour Academy coach Claudia Althans knew she had something special in this dynamic duo.Throughout the season, Peckham and Koch continued to impress, going a combined 30-0 at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions. Their chemistry and understanding of each other's game were evident in every match, and it was only a matter of time before they would team up for the state tournament.
Conquering the State: A Historic Doubles Title
When the state tournament rolled around, Peckham and Koch were ready to make history. Teaming up for the first time, the freshmen showcased their unparalleled chemistry and skill, cruising through the Strongsville sectional and Northeast Ohio district titles without dropping a single set.Their toughest challenge came in the state semifinals, where they faced a tough Cincinnati Indian Hill team. But the Gilmour duo rose to the occasion, prevailing in a hard-fought three-set battle. In the championship match, they faced off against Dayton Miami Valley and emerged victorious, claiming the Division II state doubles title – the first in Gilmour Academy's history.
"It means so much to us, especially being freshmen," said Koch. "Growing up together and being so close, I think it helps with our chemistry on the court. We understand each other and get how each other plays."
A Season for the Ages: Accolades and Achievements
Peckham and Koch's historic season was not just about the state championship. They finished the year with a combined record of 47-1, earning first-team All-Ohio honors and leading the Lancers to a runner-up finish at the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association team state championship.Their success was not limited to doubles, as they also excelled in singles play during the regular season. The duo's ability to seamlessly transition between singles and doubles showcased their versatility and adaptability, further cementing their status as rising stars in the sport.
"You don't see doubles like this often in high school, let alone as freshmen," said coach Althans. "It's really impressive to see the level of chemistry and skill they've developed at such a young age. I can't wait to see what the future holds for these two."
