Tennis: Nick Kyrgios' Australian Open Return & Cryptic Post<answer>
2024-12-12
Nick Kyrgios is on the cusp of making his long-awaited return to the tennis court with the Australian Open just a month away. After a grueling two-year absence due to persistent injuries, he is finally set to step back onto the grand stage. Fans are eagerly awaiting the appearance of the former World No.13, but a recent social media update has raised some concerns. What exactly does it all mean?
Instagram Post and Doubles Partnership
On Thursday, Kyrgios took to his Instagram to share a clip featuring himself and his doubles partner, compatriot Thanasi Kokkinakis. The duo had previously won the Australian Open together in 2022 before Kyrgios entered a recovery phase. In that final encounter, they defeated Matt Ebden and Max Purcell 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets. In his latest post, Kyrgios announced that Kokkinakis would be his doubles partner once again in the upcoming Australian Open. He wrote, "KING x KOKK ….. WE WILL BE BACK FOR THE @australianopen …." However, he also added an unexpected twist, stating, "Expect a rollercoaster….. one last time."The question now remains: will this be Kyrgios' last Australian Open or his last outing with Kokkinakis as his doubles partner? Only time will tell as he has yet to provide a proper clarification.Debunking Previous Rumors
Earlier this week, Kyrgios had shared a story on Instagram featuring a picture of him and Novak Djokovic together. Along with it, he responded to a fan's request to say something special about the 24-time Grand Slam winner, writing, "Absolute legend." He also added a mysterious line that read, "could have some exciting news soon." This led many to believe that he was hinting at a collaboration with Djokovic. However, after confirming his association with Kokkinakis, it seems highly unlikely that he will be partnering with Djokovic in the Australian Open.Thanasi Kokkinakis' Confidence
The former World No. 65 in singles, Thanasi Kokkinakis, is confident in his partner ahead of the major tournament next month. In an interaction with Canberra Times dated December 12, he said, "It’s gonna be great for tennis, great for fans in Australia, fans all over the world." He described Kyrgios as "a different cat. Obviously has a different sort of energy about him, and he’s a hell of a player, so I think people are going to love having him back."Speaking about Kyrgios' comeback after persistent injuries, Kokkinakis revealed that Kyrgios had been in good shape for a while but wanted to ensure he was fit enough to step on the court. That's why he took an extra time in announcing his return last month. When asked if Kyrgios would hit the ground running, Kokkinakis replied, "Yeah, definitely." He praised Kyrgios' powerful serving ability and believed that if he stays injury-free, he can be a dangerous player against anyone.Singles Campaign as Priority
Interestingly, Kokkinakis confessed that the priority for both of them in the event will be their singles campaigns. Despite winning the doubles title in 2022, they are not overly focused on that category. According to him, it has been "tricky" as everyone loved it last time and it was a lot of fun. "We feel like we owe it to people to get back out there and have some fun. It’s not something we’ve practised, but yeah, singles is definitely the goal," he added. What do you think about their partnership?
