"UNC Football: Belichick's New GM Michael Lombardi's NFL Journey"
2024-12-16
Belichick's decision to bring on former NFL executive Michael Lombardi as his general manager has had a significant impact on the football landscape. Lombardi's extensive NFL experience, spanning 30 years with six different teams, including three years with Belichick's Patriots and all five of his seasons as the head coach of the Browns, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise.

His Career Highlights and Achievements

Lombardi was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams during his career. In 1984, while working as a scout with the San Francisco 49ers, they achieved victory. Additionally, Belichick's Patriots won the Super Bowl in 2014 and 2016 when Lombardi was an assistant on the coaching staff. These achievements demonstrate his ability to contribute to championship teams.

Early Coaching and Scouting Career

Lombardi started his coaching career in 1981 as a recruiting coordinator at UNLV before moving on to San Francisco. There, he worked as an area scout under the legendary Bill Walsh. This early experience laid the foundation for his future success in the NFL. Later, he served as the director of player personnel for the Cleveland Browns under Belichick from 1991 to 1995. He also joined the Browns' staff as a scout before Belichick's arrival in 1987.

Later Roles and Reunions

From 1998 to 2007, Lombardi held various personnel positions with the Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders, and Denver Broncos. In 2013, he had a brief stint as the general manager of the Browns. However, it was in 2014 that he reunited with Belichick in New England. This reunion brought together two individuals with a history of success, as they had previously achieved victories together in Cleveland and New England.

His Perspective on College Football and the Game's Changes

In a media scrum following Belichick's introductory press conference, Lombardi expressed his thoughts on the changes in college football. He noted that the landscape of college football has evolved, and there is more time to develop players in college compared to the pro game due to the pro rules and collective bargaining agreement. He believes that working with Belichick again is another dream come true, as they have had success together in the past and feel that their working style is a perfect fit.Michael Lombardi (left) (Photo: Jim Hawkins/Inside Carolina)
