In an exciting matchup at the Privateer Tennis Center, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory over New Orleans' Privateers. This win marked the beginning of their Southland Conference season. The match saw UTRGV taking control early with a strong doubles performance and then maintaining momentum through singles play, showcasing impressive individual performances that sealed the deal.

The contest began on a high note for the Vaqueros as they secured the doubles point right from the start. A standout performance came from the sophomore Ivo Isqueiro and freshman Eduardo Menezes duo, who swiftly triumphed with a decisive 6-1 scoreline in the third doubles pairing. Following suit, redshirt junior Sam Whitehead and sophomore Paolo Bonaguro contributed significantly by clinching another crucial victory in the second flight with a 6-3 result.

Transitioning into singles action, the competition intensified between both teams. Freshman Loic Young Kriegel bolstered UTRGV’s lead by delivering an authoritative performance in the fourth flight, defeating his opponent with scores of 6-1, 6-4. Despite the Privateers clawing back with a win in the fifth court, Eduardo Menezes delivered a memorable three-set battle to claim his first conference victory in collegiate history. His perseverance was evident as he rebounded effectively after losing the second set to secure a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win.

Sam Whitehead further exemplified grit and determination when he closed out the match against Marc Mail in the top singles flight. Their encounter stretched deep into all three sets before Whitehead ultimately emerged victorious with a final tally of 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. Not to be outdone, Ivo Isqueiro completed the day’s highlights by overcoming initial setbacks to achieve a thrilling comeback victory in the second flight, finishing with scores of 6-7, 7-5, 6-3.
