The Victorious Run of Skinner in the Native Diver Stakes
2024-11-24
At Del Mar, the Native Diver Stakes on Saturday witnessed an extraordinary display of equine prowess. C R K Stable's Skinner, under the expert guidance of Hector I. Berrios, emerged as a one-length victor in the 47th running of this Grade III hundred grander. The 4-year-old bay colt by top sire Curlin covered the nine-furlong distance on the seaside main track in a remarkable 1:48.95, rewarding his backers with a lucrative $9.00 for each $2 bet. John Shirreffs, the conditioner of the winner, was elated with Berrios' perfect ride.

Berrios' Perfect Ride

When looking at the Pre-Post (PP) charts, it was evident that there was a significant amount of speed in the race. Hector I. Berrios, however, did an outstanding job. He didn't allow the contenders to drop back too far. After a hustling start from the gate, he secured a nice position and patiently waited. As the race progressed, he gradually crept up and then unleashed his full potential. Berrios noticed that when they reached the front, Skinner was looking around a bit, perhaps taking in the other horses. But he was much better today and seemed more comfortable in the lead. This strategic approach paid off handsomely, leading to the impressive victory. When Berrios spoke about Skinner's readiness in his last workout prior to the race, he expressed great confidence. He said, "The last time I worked the horse, I felt very, very good. I noticed a different horse (today). He moved in the straight and responded beautifully. It was a great moment to witness his growth and performance."

Competing Rivals

Finishing second in the feature race was Bernsen and Rockingham Ranch's pacesetter Tarantino. He put up a strong fight and had a head on Calumet Farm's Mixto. Despite the close competition, Skinner's determination and Berrios' skill proved to be the deciding factors.

Winner's Rewards

Skinner's victory on Saturday earned him a check for $60,000, adding to his growing bankroll of $377,300. In his career, he has only won two races out of 12 starts, but his five stakes placings, including a second in this same race last year, showcase his potential. John Shirreffs' conditioning and Berrios' ride have been instrumental in bringing out the best in Skinner, and it's clear that he is a force to be reckoned with in the world of horse racing.
