2025-01-12

The ACU men's tennis team embarked on an intense start to their spring season, facing three formidable opponents in less than 30 hours. The Wildcats played against No. 2 TCU, No. 1 Texas, and Baylor, showcasing resilience despite the challenging matches. Despite the losses, players like Martin Delnido and Daniel Morozov demonstrated commendable performances. The team now prepares for their next match at SMU on January 18th.

Battling Top Teams in Central Texas

The opening weekend of the ACU men's tennis season was anything but ordinary. Instead of easing into competition, the Wildcats dove headfirst into a series of high-stakes matches. Within a span of less than 30 hours, they faced three top-tier teams: No. 2 TCU, No. 1 Texas, and Baylor. This whirlwind of activity tested both their physical endurance and mental fortitude, providing a glimpse into the challenges that lie ahead in the spring season.

On Saturday, the Wildcats traveled to Ft. Worth to take on the Horned Frogs of TCU, who were fresh off their NCAA Championship victory from the previous year. In doubles play, Matheus Lima and Benjamin McDonald managed to keep their match competitive until it was halted due to TCU winning the other two doubles matches. In singles, TCU dominated with straight-set victories, though Martin Delnido showed remarkable resilience by forcing a tiebreaker in his second set before ultimately falling short.

Competitive Showings Against National Powerhouses

The following day, the Wildcats continued their grueling schedule with back-to-back matches against the University of Texas Longhorns and Baylor Bears. Facing the top-ranked Longhorns in Austin, the Wildcats found themselves up against a team that had earned its reputation as a national powerhouse. Despite the quick doubles losses, Ethan Scribner and Daniel Morozov put up a strong fight, only losing 6-3. In singles play, Delnido once again stood out, winning five games over two sets but ultimately succumbing to a 6-2, 6-3 defeat.

The final match of the weekend took place in Waco against Baylor. Although the Bears secured the doubles point early, the Wildcats displayed improved competitiveness compared to their previous matches. Merse Deli and Morozov narrowly trailed in the No. 1 doubles match before Baylor clinched the other two ongoing matches. In singles, Morozov pushed his opponent to a second-set tiebreaker, while Dennis Dutiné managed to win the second set 7-5 after losing the first. However, Baylor's Luc Koenig prevailed in the decisive third-set tiebreaker, 10-2. The Wildcats are now preparing for their upcoming matches at SMU and Midwestern State.
