2024-11-27
Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky is gearing up to serve a magnificent Thanksgiving meal to an astonishing number of guests. This long-standing tradition holds a special place in the hearts of many families. Executive chef Robert Lopez emphasizes that Thanksgiving at Churchill Downs is almost as significant as the Derby. With the ability to feed up to 13,000 people in the premium areas, it's a grand affair.

A Tradition Like No Other at Churchill Downs

Chef's Orchestration for Thanksgiving

Chef Robert Lopez and his team of dozens of chefs have been working in harmony over the past week to ensure the success of this event. Lopez describes it as an "orchestra," with each chef playing their part to create a seamless culinary experience. They will produce more than 3,000 pounds of mashed potatoes and an impressive 5,000 pounds of ham and turkey. It's a feat that requires meticulous planning and coordination.

The attention to detail during this Thanksgiving celebration is second to none. Just like during the Derby, every subtle nuance is accounted for, but with a stronger family focus. This tradition keeps alive the spirit of togetherness and celebration.

Roasting on a Grand Scale

Over the past couple of days, the track has been busy with a substantial amount of roasting. Lopez mentions that seeing a tractor trailer pull up with 16,000 cookies is a sight that turns heads. It's a testament to the scale of the operation and the dedication of the team.

For more than 50 years, Churchill Downs has hosted horse racing on Thanksgiving during the fall meet, along with this beloved Thanksgiving meal. As the horses take to the track, guests can enjoy watching 12 races throughout the day. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the first race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. It's a full day of entertainment and indulgence.
