Emma Raducanu's Injury Struggles

Since that remarkable win in New York over three years ago, the 22-year-old Brit has endured a lot. The inevitable hype that followed her success weighed heavily on her shoulders, and injuries became the major obstacle to her ambitions. She underwent three different surgeries in 2023, ending her season early. In 2024, she continued to battle with niggling injuries, with the second half of the season marked by the lack of time spent on court. However, Raducanu has now taken a big step to change her fitness fortunes by hiring fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura. Known for his work with Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka, Nakamura will accompany Raducanu throughout the season.

The Impact of the Fitness Move

According to Raducanu, she believes Nakamura will help her explore her athletic limits. "I think he is going to help me just really explore how far I can go, athletically," she said. She sees this as a chance to fulfill a big strength of hers that has been untapped so far. She aims to become one of the best athletes in tennis and is excited to see what she can achieve with Nakamura's help and the integrated approach she is taking with Nick.Raducanu also gave a positive update on her body's reaction after playing three matches at the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaga last month. She felt strong and fit on the training court but acknowledged that playing matches is different. She played a few matches at the King Cup and felt good, recovering well without feeling tired.

Recent On-Court Success and Future Goals

In 2024, Raducanu has shown her potential with a run to the fourth round at Wimbledon and appearances in six WTA Tour quarter-finals, including a semi-final at the Nottingham Open in June. She also achieved her first win against a top ten ranked player by beating Jessica Pegula at Eastbourne.Former British No 1 Henman believes Raducanu needs to "build up resilience" if she wants to achieve a higher ranking in 2025. Raducanu peaked at No 10 in the WTA Rankings in July 2022, and Henman feels top 30 is a realistic goal. "You talk about Katie Boulter and her improvements. It's not just about tennis skills but also the resilience to play a full schedule. Raducanu has had a decent year but needs to build that resilience. Top 50, top 30 in 2025 is completely realistic," he said.If Raducanu can maintain her fitness in 2025, there is every reason to believe she can make a break back into the top 20 of the WTA Rankings. She has the talent and potential, and with the right support and mindset, she could achieve great things in the future.
