Game Recap
The game began with Florida State on a roll, launching a quick 8-0 blitz against the Dolphins. Priscilla Williams halted the run with a pair of free throws. But Jacksonville wasn't deterred and responded with an impressive 10-0 spurt of their own, narrowing the deficit to 14-12. Sydney Bowles then broke the Dolphins' momentum with a jumper. Jacksonville's ability to get to the free throw line was evident as they shot 13 free throws in the first quarter, keeping the score relatively close at 27-23 entering the second quarter.
The second quarter started with a scare for Florida State as Ta’Niya Latson rolled her ankle and had to be helped off the court. She did not return, but the Dolphins took advantage. Makayla Edwards tied the score at 31 with a layup, prompting a timeout from head coach Brooke Wyckoff. The Noles responded with a 16-0 run, taking a commanding 47-31 lead. From there, they cruised to a 53-33 halftime advantage.
Third Quarter
In the third quarter, the Seminoles extended their lead with a 6-0 run midway through, taking a 65-38 lead. They maintained their dominance and sailed to a convincing 97-74 victory.
Post Game
Florida State was led by Makayla Timpson, who had an outstanding stat line of 27 points, 13 rebounds, and eight blocks. O’Mariah Gordon also had a big night, recording 19 points, 10 assists, and five rebounds. Mariana Valenzuela contributed 14 points (4-6 from 3-point range) and six rebounds. Carla Viegas scored 12 points and Sydney Bowles added 10 points, both reaching double figures.
The most pressing question after the game is the status of Ta’Niya Latson. With two weeks off, there is time for her to recover. Makayla Timpson and O’Mariah Gordon stepped up in her absence, and Mariana Valenzuela had her best game since returning from her ACL injury. This provides reason for optimism, but it must be tempered as the opponents were missing their leading scorer.
