Godolphin's Civetta Triumphs in the Wait a While Stakes
2024-11-28
In the thrilling world of horse racing, Godolphin homebred Civetta made a remarkable display of speed and determination. On Thursday at Gulfstream Park, this talented 2-year-old filly split horses at the top of the stretch and held off the long shot Winning Streep to claim a popular neck victory in the listed, $115,000 Wait a While Stakes. The 7 1/2-furlong race on the grass marked the opening of Gulfstream's 2024-25 championship meet and was a highlight of the special Thanksgiving program.
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr.'s Masterful Ride
Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. had a brilliant day, chasing a track-record sixth championship-meet riding title. With Civetta as his mount, he settled the filly in third along the inside as Obliging got out quickly. The opening quarter-mile in 23.90 seconds set the pace, with Sweet Sash pressing to Civetta's outside. As the race progressed, Ortiz showed great patience, sitting behind with plenty of horse. Once straightened for home, he was able to navigate Civetta between It's Witchcraft and Ramsey Pond and accelerate to the lead. When Winning Streep launched her bid on the far outside, Ortiz and Civetta matched strides and held on to win by a neck.Training and Ownership
Civetta is trained by Brendan Walsh, who gave clear instructions to keep the filly relaxed and covered up. It was her first time going two turns, but she relaxed beautifully going into the first turn. Walsh said, "She looked like she was always going to hold her. It was great to get a stakes win for her from that family. She's had a good little 2-year-old year, and we're hopeful for more in the future." Civetta is a daughter of Into Mischief out of a Medaglia d'Oro mare Sentiero Italia.Previously Challenging Races
In her prior start, Civetta took a late lead but was narrowly beaten at the wire in the six-furlong Matron (G3) on Oct. 6 at Aqueduct. Despite that setback, she showed her resilience and ability in the Wait a While Stakes. The race demonstrated her growth and development as a young horse.Final Stretch Showdown
As the field approached the final eighth of a mile, Civetta and Winning Streep engaged in a thrilling battle. The two matched strides as they separated from the field past the sixteenth pole. Civetta's determination and strength allowed her to hold sway and claim the victory. Ramsey Pond took third over It's Witchcraft with Bellavinino fifth. The win was a significant moment for Civetta and her connections. It showcased her talent and potential, and set the stage for an exciting future. Gulfstream Park's championship meet is sure to bring more thrilling races and memorable moments.
