2024-12-16
For the first time in a decade, the Sun-Times is set to publish weekly Super 25 rankings dedicated to girls basketball. This marks an exciting era as the sport's popularity surges across the region. Lyons takes the top spot in the inaugural edition of these rankings. With an impressive 11-0 record, the Lions have emerged as one of the most dominant teams early in the season. Emma O’Brien and Nora Ezike stand out as their star players, leading the charge.

Impressive Victories and Consistency

Lyons has achieved remarkable wins against Benet, St. Ignatius, Maine South, and Evanston. Their undefeated record and extensive resume speak volumes about their prowess. The win against Benet was a significant statement, but what truly stands out is their consistency. Coming out of a tough three-game stretch against Downers Grove North, St. Ignatius, and Maine South with three consecutive victories showcases their ability to maintain a high level of play. Talent has always been a part of Lyons, but now they are proving they can string together long stretches of exceptional performance.

Kenwood's Stellar Start

Kenwood has also had an outstanding start to the season. Despite Fremd's valiant comeback attempt, the Broncos' dominant start was too much to overcome. With seniors Ariella Henigan and Diann Jackson providing battle-tested leadership, junior guard Danielle Brooks as a dynamic shot-maker, senior Icesis Thomas as the team's top defender, and London Walker-George capable of making an impact in multiple ways, Kenwood is a force to be reckoned with.

Other Notable Teams

Benet, with Aria Mazza as a lights-out shooter and a team boasting impressive depth, is ranked highly. Fremd, having victories against Lake Zurich and Waubonsie Valley, also makes an appearance. Young, with a good win against Loyola at the Chicago Elite Classic, and St. Ignatius, where senior Reganne Reardon has taken a significant leap, are among the other teams making their mark. Waubonsie Valley, hosting Wheaton North on Dec. 23, and Loyola, with losses against St. Ignatius and Young, also have their stories to tell. Nazareth, with one loss to Benet, and Maine South, hosting Glenbrook North on Thursday, are part of the competitive landscape. St. Charles East, playing at St. Charles North on Friday, and Prospect, with Alli Linke making an impact on both ends, are also in the mix. Glenbrook South, playing Deerfield on Wednesday, and Lake Zurich, in need of a signature win, are looking to make their presence felt. Huntley, with wins against Mother McAuley and Hersey, Montini with Nikki Kerstein's scoring ability, Mother McAuley with a big game against Montini this week, Libertyville rebounding from a double-overtime loss to Prospect, Lane playing Kenwood on Wednesday, Batavia hosting St. Charles North on Monday, Hersey with an impressive win against Geneva, and Hinsdale Central facing Downers Grove North on Friday all add to the excitement of the season. It will be fascinating to witness how these teams perform as the holiday tournament season approaches. Each team brings its unique strengths and challenges, and the rankings will surely see some shifts along the way.
