2025-01-15

The University of Texas has reason to celebrate as Michael Huff, a standout defensive back from 2002 to 2005, has been chosen for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. This prestigious honor places Huff among an elite group of players and coaches recognized by the National Football Foundation. Huff's selection comes as part of the class of 2025, marking him as the 23rd Longhorn player to receive this distinction. His achievements on the field, including winning the Jim Thorpe Award in 2005 and earning Defensive MVP honors in the 2005 National Championship game, have cemented his place in college football history.

Huff's journey to this accolade began in Irving, Texas, where he grew up dreaming of playing for the Longhorns. His time at Texas was marked by exceptional leadership and performance. Under the guidance of Coach Mack Brown and defensive backs coach Duane Akina, Huff developed into one of the best defensive backs in college football. His most memorable moment came during the thrilling BCS Championship game against USC, where his crucial tackle on fourth-and-2 late in the game secured Texas' first national title in 35 years. Huff's contributions extended beyond football; he also excelled in track and field, qualifying for the NCAA regional meet in the 100 meters and helping Texas' 400-meter relay team achieve success.

Huff's impact on the Longhorns cannot be overstated. He started 50 out of 51 games during his four-year career, recording 318 tackles, seven interceptions, and 44 pass breakups. His versatility and intelligence on the field made him an invaluable asset to the team. Off the field, Huff's commitment to community service earned him recognition from both the University of Texas and the Oakland Raiders, who named him their Walter Payton Man of the Year honoree in 2012. After graduating with a degree in youth and community studies, Huff went on to have an impressive NFL career, playing eight seasons and culminating with a Super Bowl appearance with the Denver Broncos.

As Huff prepares for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, he continues to give back to the sport he loves. Currently serving as Texas Football's assistant director of player development, Huff shares his knowledge and experience with the next generation of Longhorns. His legacy is not only defined by his remarkable athletic achievements but also by his character and dedication to the community. The honor of being enshrined in the Hall of Fame is a testament to Huff's enduring impact on college football and the University of Texas.
