The Rapho Township Board's Funding Decision and Church Expansion
2024-11-25
When it comes to community development in Rapho Township, significant events took place during the November 21 Board of Supervisors meeting. This decision has the potential to enhance recreational opportunities and shape the future of the township.

"Transforming Rapho Township: Lights and Church Expansion"

Baseball and Softball Field Lights

After extensive discussions with residents, the supervisors made a crucial decision. They agreed to apply for a substantial $815,000 Local Share Account grant. This grant will be used to install lights at two baseball and softball fields located at the Rapho Township Community Park on Strickler Road in Manheim. Such grants are funded by state gaming revenues distributed through the Commonwealth Financing Authority. Don Wenger, the athletic field scheduling coordinator, had previously advocated for this installation during a September 19 meeting. He pointed out the tight field space in the Manheim area and the lack of new field constructions. By adding lights, games can now be played into the night at existing fields, providing more opportunities for local athletes. 2: The public's response was diverse. Chris Neiles, whose home adjoins the park, expressed his support for adding lights. He believes that night games will alleviate the increased demand for field space in the area. However, several residents with properties adjacent to the park had concerns about lighting and the potential increase in traffic. Steve Stiles questioned the impact of lights on neighboring homes, while Michael Groff asked if the township's fee schedule would be adjusted to cover the costs of operating the lights and maintaining the fields. Jeanette Carter was concerned about "cut-through" traffic on her street, Fieldstone Drive.

Church Expansion at Chiques Church

The supervisors also approved the second phase of a sketch plan for the revised expansion of Chiques Church on Sunnyside Road. In 2008, a two-phase expansion plan for the church was approved, and the first phase - the construction of an 18,485-square-foot family life building and a new parking lot in front - was completed in 2009. The revised project now includes a 2,100-square-foot addition to the family life area and an 18,395-square-foot sanctuary addition with approximately 698 seats. 2: This expansion will bring significant changes to the church and its facilities, catering to the growing needs of the congregation and the community. It represents a commitment to the spiritual and social growth of the area.
