In a profound loss for the Lee University community, the passing of Kay McDaniel has left an indelible mark on both the academic and athletic spheres. McDaniel was not only a distinguished professor of health science but also a beloved tennis coach who dedicated over three decades to nurturing young talent. Her contributions extended far beyond the classroom and courts, as she organized annual free tennis clinics that touched the lives of countless participants. This remarkable individual's journey from a top-ranked amateur player to a respected educator and coach exemplifies her unwavering commitment to the sport and community.

A Life Devoted to Tennis and Education

During the vibrant autumn of her career, Kay McDaniel joined Lee University in 1991, where she embarked on a dual role as a professor of health science and the tennis team coach. Prior to this, she had achieved national acclaim as an amateur tennis player, reaching the pinnacle of her sport. McDaniel's competitive spirit led her to compete in prestigious Grand Slam tournaments against legendary figures such as Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova. At her peak, she ranked within the top 35 globally in singles and among the top 20 in doubles.

Despite facing significant health challenges later in life, McDaniel remained steadfast in her dedication to tennis. Even after retiring from her teaching position, she continued to host summer clinics, impacting hundreds of aspiring players each year. Her final clinic, held in 2023, marked the 31st consecutive year of this generous endeavor. Sadly, McDaniel passed away on January 3 at the age of 67, leaving behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.

As a tribute to her life, a visitation is scheduled for Saturday, January 11, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Companion Funeral Home in Cleveland. Following the visitation, a memorial service will commence at 4:00 PM, officiated by Reverend Kevin Mendel and Dr. Paul Conn.
