2024-12-14
Teams from various parts of Texas have come together for a remarkable tournament that spans from Friday to Sunday. This event is not just a gathering of athletes but a celebration of the sport and community spirit. In Corpus Christi, Texas, Trevi’s Winter World Series has officially kicked off, filling the weekend with intense action on the baseball and softball diamonds.

Bringing the Community Together

At Portland Municipal Park, teams from across the state arrived on Friday, ready to compete in a tournament that will last through Sunday. There are multiple age groups involved, with around 10 teams in the eight and under bracket. One such team is Texas Elite 8U from San Antonio. Head coach Eric Huerta emphasized the hard work his team put in to secure their spot. He highlighted how special it is for the players to witness professional players like New York Yankees catcher Jose Trevino making a difference. "They love to play ball, but when you have someone like Trevino giving back to the community and organizing events like this, it not only attracts the kids to play together but also engages the parents," Huerta said. The Texas Elite 8U team consists of 12 players. Huerta mentioned that there were originally 13, but one of them unfortunately passed away due to cancer. Now, they play in his memory. Andrew Weikel, an eight-year-old infielder, was at batting practice on the U.S.S. Lexington on Thursday. He shared his experience of getting one of Trevino's bats. "After the practice, he came out and started giving away his bats. He came to our section, and it was like a moment of excitement. Whoever got the bat felt a special connection," Weikel said.Huerta also stressed to his team that if they want to have experiences like competing in this tournament and meeting sports stars, they need to work hard to earn those invitations. On Friday night at Whataburger Field, excited kids were eager to take the field and meet their baseball idols. This included Trevino, who attended John Paul II High School, as well as Sinton High School alumni Blake Mitchell and Rylan Galvan.Mitchell is now a catcher for the Quad Cities River Bandits in the Kansas City Royals farm system. He expressed his gratitude to Trevino for inviting him back to be a part of the celebrity softball game. "He's an excellent role model. There's no better person to look up to as he has achieved great things for this community. I want to do the same for Sinton and the surrounding areas," Mitchell said.Galvan, a catcher for the Texas Longhorns, enjoyed coming home to be part of the celebrity game. He mentioned that he grew up idolizing some of the other players there, and playing in the game in front of excited fans was a fulfilling experience. "To be a role model for these kids is fun. Getting to know them a little and hoping they follow in our footsteps is a great feeling," Galvan said. The tournament continues with different age groups engaging in baseball and softball games throughout the weekend. Softball will conclude on Saturday, while baseball will wrap up on Sunday.
