2024-12-12
Looking back on the 2024 Michigan football season holds a certain allure. With a major upset win over Ohio State and a victory over Michigan State, the 7-5 outcome seems a bit less painful. It's evident that the team was grappling with offensive challenges and had difficulties maximizing the potential of some of its top players. Additionally, transitioning to a new defensive coordinator wasn't as seamless as anticipated.
Highlighting the Unsung
Here are the players who often go unnoticed but play crucial roles:Marlin Klein, TE
Colston Loveland had an outstanding season, amassing 56 catches, 582 total yards, and five touchdowns. While Marlin Klein didn't post eye-popping stats, with just 101 yards on 12 catches, he stepped up when needed. He will be a key player for the Wolverines next season and will contribute to the growth of the offense under Chip Lindsey.During crucial moments, Klein showed his value. He was reliable in the passing game, making catches that kept the offense moving. His presence added a different dimension to the team's attack.Peyton O’Leary, WR
Other wideouts made significant plays and scored touchdowns, but Peyton O’Leary stood out with his unwavering effort. Against Ohio State, he made a clutch catch, using his fingertips to keep the ball from hitting the ground. Throughout the season, he also provided excellent blocking.Despite having relatively modest stats of nine catches, 95 yards, and one touchdown, O’Leary's impact on the team was significant. His determination and tenacity on the field were evident in every play.Ernest Hausmann, LB
In Wink Martindale's system, the linebackers played a vital role, especially in the early stages. While the defensive line received much credit, Ernest Hausmann's play didn't get the attention it deserved. He finished the year with an impressive 82 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, and one interception. His ability to read the play and make timely tackles was crucial in maintaining the team's defensive integrity.Rayshaun Benny, DL
Benny was on an upward trajectory at the end of the 2023 season until he got injured in the Rose Bowl. This year, despite missing a few games, he still performed well, racking up 28 total tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. His presence on the defensive line was felt, and his efforts on Ohio State's final play demonstrated his tenacity. Benny's ability to disrupt the opposing offense was a key factor in the team's defensive success.LaMar Morgan, Defensive Backs coach
Given the struggles in Michigan's secondary, LaMar Morgan hasn't received enough credit for how the defense performed in the latter part of the season without some of its best players. The preseason injury to Rod Moore was a significant setback, and then Will Johnson, Jyaire Hill, Ja’Den McBurrows, and others missed games due to injuries. Despite these challenges, the secondary managed to finish the season with 11 interceptions, including one from freshman Mason Curtis. Morgan's coaching and adjustments helped the team improve as the season progressed. What do you think? Let us know your unsung heroes in the comments below!
