Veteran Jockey Justin Stein Hangs Up Tack to Become Steward

Justin Stein, a veteran jockey with 19 seasons of experience riding thoroughbreds, has reached a significant milestone in his career. After leaving horse racing in 2016, he returned to Woodbine Racetrack in 2019, only to decide this year that it was time to hang up his tack and embark on a new journey as a racing steward with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

A Jockey's Farewell and New Beginning

Returning to the Saddle

Justin Stein began his career in 2004 in B.C., registering his first win at Hastings Racecourse. His journey took him to Woodbine, where he became a familiar face among horse racing enthusiasts. Over the years, his horses have achieved remarkable success, finishing in the money 4,314 times from 10,792 career starts and securing 98 stakes triumphs out of his 1,440 all-time wins.A career highlight came in 2012 when he won the then Queen's Plate (now reverted to the King's Plate). Stein also captured all three legs of the OLG Canadian Triple Crown during his tenure as a jockey, a feat that holds great significance in Canadian horse racing.

The Accident and the Decision

In November 2024, Stein suffered a serious accident at Woodbine, fracturing three vertebrae and breaking a rib. This incident led him to realize that this would be his final season as a jockey. He had already applied for the steward's position back in September, long before the accident.Shortly after returning home from the hospital, he learned that he had been appointed to the AGCO posting. It was a bittersweet moment for him, as he knew it was time to move on from riding but also excited about the new chapter in his life.

The Role of a Racing Steward

In his new role as a racing steward, Stein will act as a referee for horse races. He will be responsible for ensuring that the rules are followed and determining the appropriate discipline when they are broken.Stein understands that this will take some time to adjust to.
