Wide receiver E.J. Williams back at IU football after leaving
2024-12-13
Wide receiver E.J. Williams, a 6-foot-3 and 200-pound athlete, made a significant decision in October. After playing in just four games, he opted to leave the team, allowing him to take a redshirt season and maintain his final season of eligibility. Two months ago, when the news broke, Williams stated in a social media post that he planned to have surgery to enhance his chances of competing for a more substantial role in 2025. However, a change of heart occurred as On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Williams has pulled his name out of the transfer portal.
Williams' Impact in Four Games
In the four games he participated in, Williams caught two passes for 49 yards in a reserve role. His contributions were notable, even in a limited playing time. This shows his potential and the value he brings to the team.Joining the Receiver Room
Next season, Williams will join Omar Cooper, Jr. and Elijah Sarratt, forming a strong foundation for the receiver room. These three veteran wideouts will work together to enhance the team's offensive capabilities.Dealing with Injuries
Since arriving in Bloomington from Clemson ahead of the 2023 season, Williams has faced multiple injuries. He missed a significant part of the 2024 spring practice and fall camp due to these injuries. IU coach Curt Cignetti emphasized the importance of keeping Williams on the field, stating that availability is the best ability. A season ago, Williams caught 23 balls for 281 yards in eight games, performing particularly well towards the end of the season.Transfer History and Stats
Williams transferred to IU in January 2023 after three seasons at Clemson. Over three seasons with the Tigers, he recorded 40 catches for 442 yards and two touchdowns in 888 offensive snaps over 33 games (six starts) from 2020-22. As a junior in 2022, he appeared in 13 games and had seven catches for 70 yards. In his first two seasons, he had 33 receptions, including 24 as a true freshman. His best game came as a freshman in the ACC title game against Notre Dame when he had four catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. However, his 2021 sophomore year was derailed by injuries, and he struggled with drops in 2022, having a 36.4 percent drop rate according to PFF.Williams will have one season of eligibility left.
