Boynton Beach Kids Embrace Thanksgiving Breaks on the Field
2024-11-25
Instead of being glued to video games and TikTok during Thanksgiving breaks, a remarkable sight emerges in Boynton Beach. The local police department is taking a proactive step by expanding its athletic league to engage with the youth in the community. This initiative is bringing a whole new level of fun and interaction.

Fun and Interaction at the Police Athletic League

Deputy Chief Matthew Zeller shares his perspective, stating, "They’re having a lot of fun. I think the officers are probably having a little bit more fun just interacting and having a good time with them." The Boynton Beach Police Athletic League is hosting a two-day camp dedicated to America's favorite pastime - baseball. They are playing at the newly improved Galaxy Field, which has recently undergone renovations, and these kids are the first to experience the upgraded turf. For the 9 to 12-year-old group, which is in the kid pitch category, the day begins with different stations and rotation. After lunch, the real fun begins as the kids take on the roles of coaches, making the batting lineup and calling the shots. This provides them with a unique opportunity to showcase their leadership skills.

Building Bridges between Law Enforcement and Community

Zeller emphasizes the importance of this initiative, saying, "We felt it was really important to show that law enforcement are just normal people come out here. Most of these individuals that are here today are fathers or newer officers, and they need to learn that this is what we’re here to communicate with our community and be able to have some positive interactions." The goal is to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the community, and Thanksgiving break provides the perfect time as kids are already out of school. The Boynton Beach Police Athletic League plans to host more such camps and will advertise them on social media to attract families interested in signing up. The second day of the baseball camp is Tuesday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stay updated with the latest news through the WPBF 25 News app, which you can download here.
