In the charming town of Saratoga, there's an inevitable pull towards horse racing for those with a love for horses and the vibrant atmosphere. Brian Spearman, as a young adult, found himself frequently at the track. Working as a Pinkerton during a couple of summers there only intensified his affection for the sport and the magnificent animals.
It was in this environment that his love began to take root. The sight of the horses, their majestic presence, and the entire racing culture made a lasting impression on him. Saratoga became a special place, where he could get up close and personal with the horses, experiencing the sport in a way that was truly unique.
After spending 33 years at Pepsi, around 14 years ago, Brian decided to pursue his lifelong dream of horse ownership. Unsure of where to start or who to contact, a friend recommended Cot Campbell. Meeting Cot was a turning point as he became a Dogwood partner for several years and learned a great deal from him.
Cot introduced Brian to Aron Wellman of Eclipse Thoroughbreds, and together they have been partners for a decade. This partnership has only deepened Brian's love for the sport. Keeneland, Del Mar, and Santa Anita are all wonderful places, but Saratoga holds a special place in his heart.
Saratoga offers a venue where people can be close to the action and feel the family atmosphere. Back then, the paddock wasn't even fenced in, allowing for an intimate experience with the horses. The focus on the horses themselves, rather than just the gambling aspect, was what initially drew Brian to the sport.
Watching these magnificent animals in action was a powerful experience. It's hard not to fall in love with the sport when you're surrounded by such beauty and excitement. Brian's own father also worked as a Pinkerton and took him to see famous horses like Secretariat and Jaklin Klugman, further fueling his passion.
In the last 10 years, being associated with some of Eclipse's standard bearers has been a special experience for Brian. Winning the Belmont with Tapwrit and having horses like Feathered and Nest by his side have been moments of great pride and joy.
These experiences have only strengthened his love for the sport and made him more committed to its growth. Horse racing continues to captivate him, and he looks forward to many more years of being a part of this thrilling world.
