Wyoming Horse Racing Tragedies Revealed Through FOIA Request
2025-02-20

Recent revelations from a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the Wyoming Gaming Commission have shed light on a series of unfortunate incidents at the state's racetracks during the previous year. The data highlights several cases where horses suffered fatal injuries, raising concerns about safety measures within the industry. These events occurred across different tracks and involved young horses in their early racing careers, emphasizing the risks faced by animals in competitive environments.

In one instance, a two-year-old horse named Kcross Cut and Run met with internal bleeding just after its first race on May 27. This tragic event was followed by another case involving Seperate N Flash, who experienced a carpal fracture past the wire on June 21. The following day, Milli Starr, a seven-year-old mare, faced a devastating injury described as shattered sesamoids. Each of these incidents underscores the perilous nature of horse racing, particularly for younger animals.

The summer months saw more distressing news. Your Ringer, a five-year-old, succumbed to similar injuries on June 30, while Tmt Sorrynotsorry, a two-year-old filly, tragically flipped and hit her head during what would have been her debut race on July 7. Later that month, Lew Lew Belle, also five years old, jumped a rail and fractured a leg, leading to her untimely death. These occurrences highlight the unpredictable dangers inherent in equestrian sports.

Further into the season, Vvr Bitcoin, Prairie Spirit, and Wb Oceans of Cash all faced critical accidents between August and September. Bitcoin slipped and fractured a leg, Prairie collided with another horse during a turn, and Oceans of Cash stumbled, fracturing a knee. All three were two years old and either preparing for or participating in their inaugural races. Such incidents not only affect the animals but also raise questions about the protocols in place to protect them.

These reports underscore the importance of stringent safety regulations and compassionate treatment of racehorses. The frequency and severity of these incidents call for a thorough review of current practices and an exploration of ways to enhance the welfare of these magnificent creatures. The hope is that such scrutiny will lead to improved conditions and fewer tragedies in the future.
