2024-11-29
Del Mar's turf festival is set to kick off in high gear on Saturday at the seaside oval. Racing fans will be treated to a trio of turf tests at different levels throughout the afternoon. The highlight of the day will be the 84th running of the Hollywood Derby, a Grade 1 race with a $300,000 purse and limited to 3-year-olds.

Experience the Thrill of Del Mar's Turf Races

Hollywood Derby

The favorite in the Hollywood Derby is Carson’s Run, a shipper from the east who has won five of nine lifetime starts and amassed more than $1 million. He is a son of the Tapit sire Cupid. Other notable horses in the race include Stay Hot, Rothschild, Chatalas, and many more. Each horse brings its own unique story and potential to the track.

For example, Stay Hot finished 2nd in the 2024 Twilight Derby G2 and is now aiming for victory in the Hollywood Derby G1. Rothschild, with a rating of 5.92, has shown promise in previous races and is looking to make a comeback. Chatalas, with a rating of 6.47, has also had some solid performances and is ready to take on the competition.

Seabiscuit Handicap

In the Seabiscuit Handicap, Redistricting is the top choice. This British-bred 4-year-old just missed in his comeback start in a Grade III at Aqueduct last month. He failed to finish the course here last year when he competed in the Hollywood Derby. Other horses in the race include Fast Buck, Sumter, Seal Team, and more.

For instance, Fast Buck finished 2nd in the California Flag H. and is now gunning for a win in the Seabiscuit Handicap G2. Sumter, with a rating of 6.03, won the 2024 Lure Stakes RS and is looking to continue his winning streak. Seal Team, with a rating of 5.92, has also had some decent performances and is ready to give it their all.

Jimmy Durante

In the Jimmy Durante, Supa Speed is the one to beat. In her last start at Santa Anita in October, she was in a world of trouble but managed to finish 2nd in the Juvenile Fillies Turf at Del Mar on Sept. 7. Other horses in the race include Resolve, Slick, Lee’s Baby Girl, and more.

For example, Resolve won the Dmr MSW (11/3/24-R3) and is now aiming for another victory in the Jimmy Durante G3. Slick finished 4th in the Dmr MSW (11/3/24-R3) and is looking to bounce back. Lee’s Baby Girl also finished 2nd in the Dmr MSW (11/3/24-R3) and is ready to compete at a higher level.

These three stakes races offer a diverse range of competition and excitement for racing enthusiasts. With talented horses from different backgrounds and connections, the stage is set for an unforgettable day of turf racing at Del Mar.
